Long time no see...and a question

Postby honkerman on Sat Aug 08, 2015 11:10 am

Howdy folks. I know, I haven't been to this forum in a looooooong time. I'm still riding, and just did another 1300 mile trip (in 8 days), last summer. At this point, I still have my Kymco People 150, but I'm looking to get a Honda PCX-150. I've been toying with the idea for about three months and the wife and I finally decided it's time. The People has over 24,000 miles on it and is still going strong, but I'm worried it will need a rebuild soon if I keep taking it on longer trips.

Here's my concern. There are two problems with the PCX-150 for my riding purposes, the first is that the windscreen is too short, which can be remedied because there are after-market options available. The second is the rear "rack" isn't much more than a spoiler and is relatively useless, but I can't find an after-market rack extension. Sure, I can get a top box, but I prefer a crate since I can fit all my camping gear in one. Do any of you have any inkling of whether I could adapt another rack to fit? I've not been able to find anything through google and I really don't want to ruin the existing hardware.

Thanks kindly.

Oh, and if anyone is interested, I wrote up my thoughts on the PCX-150 on my blog: http://scootinfool.blogspot.com/2015/08 ... x-150.html

Probably going to miss a flat floorboard for transporting gallon jugs, 12 packs, and bags of pet food or water softener salt. Is the SYM RV200, which has a kick-start lever, unsuitable for your criteria?

I adore my Dlite 110 and it holds tons of stuff under the seat, but the rack needed improvement for bulky, heavy hauling. I use a Rubbermaid sink rack in my Elite 110 to extend the lame rack supplied. These come in two sizes and are rubber covered wire (as shown on my bike) or chrome. Find in a hardware or houseware store or Lowes, etc. Smaller size is about $7, big one (more than 20 inches long) is around $12). Attaches to OEM rack with zip ties. Very sturdy, holds 25 lbs of cat litter container or a case of water bottles, etc. Cargo is tied to it with bungees and the bungee hooks can grab the rungs of the wire rack in any position. Versatile and inexpensive and very unobtrusive when not in use. If the rubber coating tears and wire eventually starts to rust, it's pretty cheap to buy and easy to find a replacement. Chrome version or stainless steel (expensive type) will not rust or break down.

My friend owns a black Honda SH 150i and uses the big sized chrome version of the same rack. Much bigger and holds more and heavier stuff. Neither of us likes a top box or a milk crate.

He loves that SH150i and I highly recommend that bike if you are looking for a fine Honda 150. I don't know if it's still brought in to the US. We both bought our bikes in 2011. The PCX150 has that high stepover and that's a deal breaker for me. I like the higher riding position for the feet, but I would prefer a floorboard and and a true (shallow) stepthrough like most scooters. I hope whatever you buy makes you very happy.

Hope pix help for ideas for better cargo carrying..

I don't use the floorboard for carrying things. The floor on the People 150 pinches in the middle a bit and isn't useful for carrying stuff. The PCX is priced right and has a solid feel that I like for my long distance rides.

Thanks for the suggestions Giz. I have ridden an SH-150, but they no longer import them to the U.S.. Also, the PCX-150 fits my budget. I may try your suggestion, but I"m not sure if it will work on the PCX because the "rack" is so small.

There are no holes to put twist ties through. I'd rather not make holes either. You've sparked my imagination though and I think I have an idea.

Thanks. :D

Proud to help you or inspire any solution you come up with.
Be sure to post pix of the new toy when you get it.
Hope someone buys the Kymco real soon.

Honda does make a rack base mount for the pcx. You actually have to drill thru the grap rail. If you look at the under side of the grab rail you'll see that there is 4 spots where you drill thru. This rack base is not the same one used on the metro. Earlier PCX accessories show same trunk/base as the metro but this newer rack base came out end of 2012.

I'm not sure but looking at the trunk base it seems like it can fit the same honda top box that also goes with the SH150. The three mounting slots, two front one rear, looks just like the sh150. Cool thing about that top box is that it can quickly attach/detach from the base.

I ordered the Honda base. It isn't exactly what I want, but the tubular steel rack I want is only available in Japan and I have no way to get it from there. :D
