Idle musings

Postby ronnath on Sun Oct 17, 2010 3:54 pm

Today, I exalted in the Hawks victory over the Wolverines yesterday.
I read the statistics in this morning’s newspaper and gloated about the wonderfulness of their triumph.

The day dawned in the high 40’s and I resolved to take a victory ride through the mean streets of Des Moines to demonstrate my pride.

This, of course, is sitting on the dining room table ready to go:

Then, the phone rings. My kid from New York is calling to check on the old man. We chat and agree that the Tea Party candidate, Paladino, can’t keep his foot out of his mouth, and Cuomo should breeze to victory.

The phone call ended, we head to the garage to saddle up, and WTF?

Dead battery. Farrgghh.

What have I done to offend the Gods of Scooterdom? It can’t be the Hawks.

It must be the sin of gluttony.

Or vanity.

Or pride.

Another damn thing on the list for tomorrow.

Idle musings, Part 2

I'm asking myself whether it's possible for enough juice to do the "majesty needle sweep" but not enough to engage the starter. I suppose - after all, I'm not a battery expert.

Damn, and it's parked in the garage in such a position that it's gonna be a pain to pull off that battery cover on the back of the bike, and then get to the terminals for the charger.

So, I said to myself, not today, I’ll do it later in the week because my calendar is pretty full for the next three days.

As I type this, it's the next morning and I’m thinking about getting the battery: a) charged, or b) pulled out and taken for testing, and c) grumbling about maybe having to buy a new one.

A few minutes ago I have to visit the "men's room" here in the house and, while doing my duty, think back to last week and recall it was pretty pleasant - my four year old granddaughter had visited, had a nice lunch with a lady friend, great weather, a whole week without a single bill showing up in the mailbox. Life is good.

Wait! What! That adorable little girl loves to ask me when I will take her on a ride. I explain that she has to grow up and get a bit taller in order to reach the footrests. To show her, I put her on the passenger seat and show how much she has to grow.

She slides forward on the seat and grabs the handlebars and has a good time pretending she is riding.

Could it be? Well, could it?

It's still dark here this morning and I grab a flashlight and head outside.

You guessed it - she'd toggled the kill switch.
