Participation is probably down for several reasons. First, it is finally riding season, so we're all out riding instead of reading. Second, it seems like a lot of people didn't come back from when we were getting hundreds of spam postings a day. It was hard to find real content for the crapola. And finally, Jeff has closed registration, so there won't be any more new members here at urbanscootin. So as old members wander away, there will not be newbies to replace them.

I see a sad future for this forum. SChooter.com was closed without any notification whatsoever to the several fairly active members. At least urbanscootin's domain is paid up through July 2013.

yep, tis a pity, steve.

At least that will encourage those seeking information to make a worthwhile forum research effort. The ScootDawg forum is continuously abused by the no-search slacker crowd re-posted the same issues over and over again. Many seem unfamiliar with Google Advanced Search . . or are just too lazy to utilize that resource.

SHcooter died? Shit- I was out of town on a family emergency.

I need to give that domain to someone that cares about it. Do you know if any of the members know how to run a web forum?

yeah, that spam business was disconcerting a few months back. sorry that contributed to the closing of registration... this has been a great forum for me, as a relative newbie.

i've learned a lot and i feel it's a great, supportive group to share experiences and thoughts on all things scooter, honda or not.

Indeed true, misu. there's a shitload of good stuff dealing with Mets. The search function alone will provide a great deal of info.

Why is registration closed? Is this a planned forum shutdown? Its really too bad if that's the case....as these boards close down (Shcooter, ScooterTime.net) we lose a VAST amount of knowledge!

Why is registration closed? Is this a planned forum shutdown?

This was pretty well publicized back in April by the Admin and Mods. Maybe you weren't reading the board through the winter and especially back in March and April when it was overrun with spam and Steve and I were at it day and night to delete posts and ban newly registered members who were ruining the fun, only to see dozens of meaningless and mostly vulgar posts multiply in every topic area overnight. Or maybe you were lucky enough to take a look only at times right after we did a cleanup so you never noticed the truckful of spam. We were getting 50 or more a day of porn spam and internationally registered "members" posting in languages most of us in America don't read, with photos that just didn't seem to relate to scooters, so their text was presumed irrelevant. We don't care where you're from, as long as you post here with respect, but none of these did.

So Jeff closed registration to keep the Mods from quitting, to encourage current and legitimate members to keep reading and posting and to keep the board open for those who can still read all topics but not join. Until a better security scheme or more integrated methods of keeping out those who have only malicious intent in posting here, the current membership must stagnate. There are fewer new stimulating posts from new folks. "New members" means hasn't been here for a while, not never posted before. Nobody new has been let in since April 12.

If the choice was closing the forum or closing registration, you can see which was better. As of now, there is no reason to believe urbanscootin is going to shut down.

Wasn't doing much scooting over the winter and extra rainy spring we had here in western WA, so I missed that whole debacle.

In this context, the actions make sense. I'm glad the board is still up and I hope we can find a way to make it more secure. Perhaps using openID ( http://openid.net/ ) or something like that might help? Their whole focus is handleing logging in so that people who run websites can focus on content, not security etc.

Seems to be wide non-particpation on all the scoot sites as people have grown anxious and preoccupied with money troubles and world events for three years now. Though I should have plenty to say about the Met and splendors therefore, I'm 'fraid, like many, I've had my head down with the larger hassles of living.

And yet, as I am reminded every time I straddle the little thing with my too-long legs and arms and trunk, it is the derestricted whippy riding and swift traffic-flaunting of it that restores the spirit and reinvigorates the anima; the anodyne of hooligan moves and wide grins, the small triumph of being stopped by an unmarked two-ton whooping blue-lighted Ford Crown Vic for speeding on a 49cc scooter that refreshes the soul.

The thing is a great comfort and joy; cheap, simple, and thrilling. Gloom departs when the engine starts.
I'm Swiss on that.

:( I just my scooter back, finally after 4 years of not having her and I came here to see what everyone has been up to and find the forums barren.
That really sucks about the spam but I completely understand why new registration is prohibited.
On a lighter note I just want to say Hello to all the old-headz :) of the forum and I hope everyone one has been riding safe since the last time I was here.

Wow, V, it's really you! WELCOME BACK!! Hope you'll post often. Not much changed here, but I have given up my swell little Met and bought a new Elite in April. Love the smooth easy speed and the hot red color, and got a good trade-in for my blinged out well maintained Met.
