I Need To Change My Gear Oil?

Postby New2Scoots on Sat Mar 03, 2018 12:20 am

I just read "how to change your gear oil." Hmmm. No mention of that in my owner's manual. Or what kind of oil to use. So I assumed the gears share oil with the engine like most motorcycles do. I do change the gear oil in my other scoot. Mine's a 2013 Metro. Something I didn't know or is this for other models?

Anyone know what kind of gear oil a 2013 Honda Metro uses? The owner's manual doesn't mention it.

A bit late in answering, but the 2013-2014 Honda Service Manual specifies Pro Honda HP4M (or equivalent), SAE 10W-30, for use in the final reduction case. Quantity = 0.13 liter / 0.14 U.S. quarts.

This oil is exactly that specified for use in the crankcase.

Comment - It may appear odd to use crankcase oil rather than a dedicated gear oil containing additives to better handle extreme pressure. My guess is that the lubrication needs of the final drive under design operating conditions are satisfactorily met with crankcase oil. The drivers for this would be economy and better MPG, given the relatively low viscosity of 10W-30.

If the engine is hot-rodded (i.e. BBK), it would be wise to consider something "better" (Royal Purple or Lucas 75W-90 synthetic gear oils), as bearing loads will be higher than design values.
