If you go too long between oil changes, your oil will be filthy and burned out. Black sludgy oil is a sign of neglect and promises trouble. Rule of thumb is every 1000 miles or every 12 months for an oil change, whichever comes first. Frequent oil changes are beneficial, especially if your oil was that filthy. Which do you think is cheaper, a quart of oil or a seized engine? Won’t be a bad thing to be looking at the dip stick or other inspection means to see how badly darkened your oil becomes. Then decide if you’re approaching a good time for clean oil. If your bike has an oil filter or screen, you should change that as well.

I cannot advise about gear oil. Check your owners manual or look up specs for your bike online.
